INYOKERN – The Indian Wells Valley Airport District and Kern County Fire Department reached an agreement over the lease of the Inyokern fire station. The airport district voted 3-0 to approve the contract at a special meeting Thursday afternoon stipulating a 25-year lease for the station, which the district owns and sits Inyokern Airport property.
As part of the deal, the fire station will pay $7,580 a month in rent, or $2,361,000 over the period of the agreement. The contract also stipulates that the cost may be adjusted based on the Consumer Price Index, but no more than 2 percent per annual adjustment.
In return, the airport district will assume crash rescue response responsibilities — something staff thinks it could accomplish due to the lack of an commuter airline operating out of the airport.
“The idea is we take over the fire crash crew responsibilities as we don’t have an airline any more,” said airport district board president Paul Valovich during Thursday’s meeting.
Valovich said the airport district had several meetings with the Kern County Fire Department.
